China’s Evolving Threat: Testing US Fault Lines with AI-Fueled Disinformation

A recent report by Microsoft on East Asian cyber threats highlights China’s intensification of AI-powered disinformation campaigns.

Artificial intelligence (AI), used to create deepfakes and generate deceptive content, poses a serious threat to the integrity of elections and fuels social division.

Security analysts warn of an escalation in AI-powered influence operations orchestrated by state actors, and in this case China. Unfortunately for us, Beijing’s strategic objectives include the manipulation of public opinion and the sowing of discord within democracies. This is often achieved through the use of fake social media accounts and the dissemination of AI-generated propaganda.

During the Taiwanese presidential election, Chinese actors deployed AI-generated content in a clear attempt to influence outcomes.

This is bad news for the US elections, there is substantial risk that China will intensify its use of AI-generated content to further its geopolitical interests.

The future is starting to look more like Blade Runner and Matrix than The Jetsons.
